Townhall Summit Lab

Overview -

Public statements in townhall style meetings or summits are a regular part of the decision-making process. Often this includes testimony from invited experts and/or from the public, in which the speaker reads aloud a well prepared statement of their perspective on the issue at hand.  In this online class, you will "speak out" in a virtual townhall meeting on a controversial environmental topic.

Background

In this portion of the Townhall lab, you get a chance to consider the statements of others in your group and then to revise and improve your argument. After reading the statements from other stakeholders involved in the controversy, you should have a broader view of the challenge than when you first wrote your statement.

Revisit the Week 7 - LAB Background if you need a reminder of what is a stakeholder and/or a stakeholder position. For example, just stating "I am a lion tamer" is not adequate. How long have you been taming lions? Who is your employer? A circus, a zoo, a casino in Las Vegas? Why do you tame lions? What have you done or accomplished that would make your statements as a lion tamer relevant to this controversy? Why are you choosing to speak at this town hall meeting? Is it the zoning changes that will affect feline owners, the restrictions on backyard fencing or that the Humane Society wants you to pay a licensing fee?

Instructions

Read the other stakeholders' positions on your assigned controversy in the Week 7 LAB discussion board. Revise your Week 7 position statement based on instructor feedback and other stakeholders' positions and arguments. Your revised statement should again be no more than four paragraphs long (300-400 words).

The goal is to be short and sweet (people only read short comments on the internet), but powerful and convincing. Use the following as a guide to develop your presentation. Note that the items in bold are changes you must make to the statement you submitted in Week 7.

  • Check the grading rubric and comments on your Week 7 submission. Make improvements to any areas that were lacking.
  • Summarize all sides of the controversy at hand and state your position on the issue. Revisit the Week 7 - LAB Background if you need a reminder of what is a stakeholder and stakeholder position.
  • Explain several (2-5) pieces of evidence you have acquired from cited reputable sources that led you to your conclusion. Demonstrate your mastery of the issue and knowledge of the facts.
  • Consider at least two other stakeholders' viewpoints, their validity, and why you respectfully disagree.
  • Cite your sources, including author, date, title, and URL
  • Copy and paste your old statement below your new statement in the Assignment and submit both via the Week 10 LAB assignment in Canvas.
