This take-home exam consists of two sections: 1) an SPSS data project;

SECTION 1: SPSS PROJECT

You will be analyzing two variables in your data set, weight (in pounds) and height (in inches), from individual-level survey data. The answers must be provided in order and separately for each part (1) through (7).

(1) What type of variable is "height" and in what units is it measured? Using SPSS, generate a histogram of the height variables. Based on the histogram only, discuss the approximate range, the approximate midpoint, and the overall shape of the height distribution. (Include the histogram in your answer.)

(2) Now report the exact mean and standard deviation of the height variable. Assume that height is normally distributed with that mean and standard deviation. Explain which height range contains approximately 68% of the observations in your sample; which height range contains approximately 95% of the observations in your sample.

(3) What type of variable is "weight" and in what units is it measured? Generate an SPSS-Boxplot of the weight variable. With reference to the SPSS-Boxplot only, report the approximate range of weights that make up the 50% of the observations in the middle of the data, discuss the overall shape of the weight distribution, and comment on potential outliers. (Include the Boxplot in your answer.)

(4) Report the exact median, mean, and standard deviation of the weight distribution. Carefully explain why or why not the values for the mean and the median are consistent with your discussion of the overall shape in part (3)?

(5) What is the correlation coefficient between weight and height? What does it tell you? Interpret it carefully. Explain whether or not the use of the correlation coefficient is appropriate.

(6) Use weight as dependent variable and height as independent variable. Obtain estimates of the intercept and the slope of the corresponding least squares regression line. Write down the equation that describes your regression line. What is the interpretation of the intercept and the slope? Report the coefficient of determination (r2) and interpret it.

(7) Use your regression line to predict the weight of a person who is 65 inches tall
