Ask Statistics and Probability Expert

The purpose of this activity is to help you learn how to enter data into SPSS by yourself.  You will use SPSS via Acadlabs.  You will discuss this activity in your group and will then use that discussion to help you complete the Own Data File and Analysis assignment that you will submit to the Course Director for grading at the end of this week (week 11).  Note that this activity and the assignment are slightly different in that you will need to actually conduct the test for the assignment, but not for the group activity.

1.      Create an SPSS data file with the following variables:

  • ID.
  • Sex (1 = male; 2 = female).
  • Hair colour (1 = brown; 2 = red; 3 = blonde; 4 = grey; 5 = black).
  • Age (in years).
  • Grades (A, B, C, D, E, F).
  • Go to Acadlabs and open SPSS.
  • You should be in variable view with similar columns to those you saw in the 'practice data.sav' file.

This time, you create the variables:

  • Variable name can have a maximum of 8 characters (e.g., 'hair' instead of 'hair colour').
  • Type - go to the box and select '...' (in grey) for options - usually want numeric.
  • Width is the number of spaces/columns needed for the data/numbers to be entered (leave as 8 default).
  • Decimals - set to 0 (zero); click in box and arrows appear, click ↑ or ↓.
  • Label - longer name to clearly describe the variable.
  • Values - go to the box and select '...' (in grey); in 'Value' type 1, in 'Label' type name [e.g., male], click 'add'; repeat as needed, then OK.
  • You should be able to figure out the rest from your experience with the 'practice data.sav' file.

2.   Save the file to a name you'll remember.  Save this data file in a folder on your own computer (or USB key) so you can submit it with your assignment.  Do not save it in your Acadlab folder otherwise you will not be able to share it.

3.   Make up data for 30 subjects for each of the variables you created and enter data into SPSS.

4.  Write one hypothesis that you could test given the data you have; propose an appropriate statistical test to test the hypothesis and share with your group, but do not conduct the test.  You can use the feedback from your group to help you choose an appropriate test to run for the assignment.
