The Dale article is an example of a study utilizing the t-test in the analysis of data. As with the other articles we have seen, read enough of the Introduction and Purpose to understand what the authors were trying to do in this study. Read enough of the Methods to understand how things were measured.

Read the Data Analysis section carefully; you should understand the majority of what is written there if you have reviewed the material on t-tests.

Read the authors' conclusions. Did the data support those conclusions?

The Faigenbaum article illustrates the use of an ANOVA. In this case, there were three independent groups being compared. Read through the Introduction and Purpose to understand the point of the study.

Read the Methods to get an idea of what was measured.

Read the authors' conclusions and see if they are supported by the data presented.

a. t-test

b. correlation

c. ANOVA

d. simple regression

A researcher performs an ANOVA to determine whether the 4 groups in his study are different. The result of the ANOVA is a significant result. What is the next test that is performed to determine specifically which of the 4 groups are different?

a. t-test

b. correlation

c. post hoc test

d. ANOVA

Tests to determine whether means are different can only be used when:

a. The samples being compared are from the same population

b. The samples being compared have variances that are similar

c. The samples being compared have normal distributions

d. All of the above

e. None of the above

If a researcher selects a sample from a population and then randomly assigns the members of the sample to either a control group or a group who will receive a new drug for the treatment of diabetes, what statistical test would be used to determine whether the groups differed in their blood glucose levels measured at the 6 month time point?

a. Independent t-test

b. Dependent t-test

c. One way ANOVA

d. Repeated measures ANOVA

A researcher selects a sample from a population and measures the blood pressure response of the group to three different conditions: 15 minutes of a horror movie, 15 minutes of a video lecture by their boss, and 15 minutes of guided meditation. Each person experiences each condition on separate days and in random order. Which test should be used to compare the blood pressure responses under the 3 conditions?

a. Independent t-test

b. Dependent t-test

c. One way ANOVA

d. Repeated measures ANOVA

A researcher wants to determine whether people who attempt a medically supervised weight loss program significantly lose weight over 6 months. Weight is measured before the group starts the program and then is measured again after 6 months. Which test should be used to determine whether body weight is significantly different?

a. Independent t-test

b. Dependent t-test

c. One way ANOVA

d. Repeated measures ANOVA

A study is performed to compare several different pain reducing medications for the treatment of migraine headaches. The drugs tested are: Placebo, Tylenol, Excedrin, Imitrex. Four hundred migraine sufferers were recruited for the study and they were randomly assigned to one of the four groups and were given unmarked tablets to take when they had a migraine. The effectiveness of pain relief was documented with a survey and compared between groups. Which statistical test should be used to compare the pain relief effectiveness between the four groups?

a. Independent t-test

b. Dependent t-test

c. One way ANOVA

d. Repeated measures ANOVA
