The chapter on motivation in the textbook provides several different theories on what motivates a person in the workplace and how managers can respond to those motivational theories.  Some of those theories include:

  • McGregor's Theory X / Theory Y
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
  • McClellend's Need Theory (achievement, power, affiliation)
  • Equity Theory
  • Expectancy Theory

Additionally, there are LOTS of other theories that have been written about regarding motivation in the workplace.  And, each and every person has individual needs that are important including specific issues like pay and benefits, job security, recognition/appreciation, promotion and ability to "move up", working conditions, interesting and valued work, enjoyable coworkers, loyalty, being included on decisions, and sympathetic supervisors.  The list can go on and on.

In this homework, you are to:

Section 1: Identify the top four or five specific job related issues that motivate and that are important to you.  Define and explain them specifically.

Section 2: Identify whether or not your specific organization/company is fulfilling those job related issues stated in Section 1.  And in what ways are those issues being fulfilled (or not) by the organization you work for?  If you do not work for an organization right now, use a previous organization.

Section 3: Identify which Motivational Theory explained in the textbook is most used by your organization or supervisor in your work setting.  Also identify which Motivational Theory explained in the textbook you most closely identify which that you WISH your supervisor used on you.  For example, you might say you identify the most with "Herzberg's Two Factor Theory because at XYZ Company motivation factors are....."

Section 4: Finally, identify which personal motivation needs your company/organization may not be meeting for you and come up with a solution on how your organization might be able to meet them.  Use specific examples of how your own supervisor (for example) might be able to change/do in order to help motivate you more.

Please follow APA style.  You may write this paper in 1st person (I, me, my), but be careful not to overuse 1st person as it can be very distracting to read the overuse of the person pronoun "I" in a paper.   The paper should be no shorter than four pages long (not counting a cover page and reference page), and no longer than five pages long.  Please use appropriate citations including the course textbook and other sources as well that are appropriate to this type of graduate-level course.
