Report on students' performance in Statistics for Business

An Australian Business School is keen to improve students' performance in the subject Statistics for Business, and understand important differences in students' performance across gender and international student status. Assume you work as an Analyst for this Business school and you have been asked to study the current students' performance. You have collected data for 60 students taking the subject in the Business School. The data is on an excel file named "STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS GRADES". The data collected are recorded in the file as follows:

Mark - Mark of each student

Classes - 3 Classes: Class 1, Class 2, Class 3

Status - 1 for Domestic students, 2 for International students

Gender - Gender: 1 for female students; 2 for male students

Assignment Tasks:

1. Visually present data for the marks from different classes. Calculate descriptive statistics for the marks of different classes. Comments on the location, shape and variability of those distributions.

2. Visually present data for the marks for domestic and international students. Calculate descriptive statistics for the marks of domestic and international students among the classes. Comments on the location, shape and variability of those distributions.

3. Visually present data for the marks of students in Class 1 for domestic and international students. Calculate descriptive statistics for the grades of students in Class 1 by domestic or international status. Comments on the location, shape and variability of those distributions.

4. You have been asked to analyse difference in marks between female and male students. How do you test whether there is a significant difference of average marks across these two groups? Use appropriate inferential statistical techniques.

5. Using the data collected, how do you test the claim that there is no significant difference of the average marks of students from the different classes? What do you find from your analysis? Use appropriate inferential statistical techniques.

6. The Business School is interested in understanding the performance of domestic and international students. How do you test whether there is a significant difference of average marks across the two groups? Use appropriate inferential statistical techniques.

7. How do you test whether there is significant difference between average marks of domestic and international students from Class 1? Use appropriate inferential statistical techniques.

Provide a thorough discussion of the implications of your findings.

  • Interpret appropriate output from statistical computer packages such as SPSS/Minitab/Excel.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in analysis, interpretation and application of managerial statistics.

Your report must include:

a. An Executive Summary (100 to 150 words). In this section you summarize the main conclusions of the report in business language. It should also describe the primary purpose of the study, the general methodology used, the significant findings of each section, as well as key general conclusions and recommendations.

b. A Table of Contents with page numbers

c. Business Problem as given in the question in business language.

d. Statistical problem using the language of statistics (i.e. methods you have used to do your analysis).

e. Analysis: This section should present statistical output and discuss the results from all the analyses conducted. Outline required steps and show necessary computer output. Clearly label tables and graphs.

f. General Conclusion: This section should briefly review the study, summarize the inference(s) stemming from it, and highlight the evidence supporting each inference. Where appropriate, indicate the limitations of the results. The conclusions should be written in business language and in terms of the variables under discussion.

g. Implications: bearing in mind why the study was undertaken, briefly describe the implications and consequences of the conclusions drawn. You should include your recommendations for action (based on what you have found in your study).
