Situation and Data: An electronic component manufacturer you work for has to select a new supplier of 2K (2000 ohm) resistors. An outside consulting group has assisted your design group in reducing the choices down to two suppliers, Ulti-Resist and Mega-Resist. Your quality engineering department (QED) must do further analysis to determine which supplier to select. You are asked to do a complete SPC analysis. This is a significant investment for your company, therefore you should be very interested in making sure you select a good supplier. Your QED obtained the services of the independent testing firm Gatherers, Inc. (GI), to perform tests and collect data from these two resistor suppliers. GI has gone to each of the suppliers and collected one week worth of production data (40 to 50 hours). In each case, GI randomly sampled 5% of production every hour to see if the resistors were meeting product specifications. Target specifications are 2000 ohms, +/- 1% tolerance.

Analysis: You are to completely analyze the situation for your company.

1.) You should run all of the descriptive statistics and graphical analyses (boxplots, histograms). You should analyze each supplier separately and then compare them. Look for the possibility of outliers in each data set.

2.) What are the confidence intervals on the mean, variance, and fraction non-conforming of each system?

3.) Are both of these suppliers meeting the target level of resistance?

4.) Assess the stability (time series) and capability of each system.

5.) Build and analyze x-bar/s control charts for each system.

6.) If out-of-specification resistors cause lost revenue at a rate of $0.015 per resistor, what are the lost revenue projections for each company? Assume operating 50 weeks/year.

7.) Are these suppliers the same? How do you know? Prove it. For system comparison calculations, you should take a random sample of 75 points from each set. Report how you take this sample.

8.) On the basis of your analysis, make a recommendation to your company on which resistor supplier to select for production of the electronic components. Support your choice with results from the analysis. Present your findings in a technical report as outlined below.

1.) Title page (title, your names, your company, date, who reporting to)

2.) Executive Summary (1 page: Summarize the problem, what you did, key results and recommendations)

3.) Introduction (describe the problem and procedures & analyses you will do)

4.) Results and Discussion (summarize your findings, include Figures and Tables as appropriate)

5.) Conclusions and Recommendations (did you solve the problem, what were the pitfalls, what assumptions were made that might change the results, what should we do?)

6.) Appendices (calculations, supplementary Tables and Figures that support the report but don't belong in the main body) Evaluation: 1.) Solving the problem 75% 2.) Professional engineering presentation of solution (written and graphical delivery) 25% Job 2 reports (one per group) should be submitted to the Blackboard "Job Assignments" page. The MS Word file should be labeled as "Job 2 Last names.docx". Data for Job 2 will be available on Blackboard.
