Report Card for the U.S. Government

In this project, you will answer the question, "How successfully is the United States Government fulfilling its key goals-as established in the Preamble to the Constitution?" Using your Knowledge of American Government, and in particular the Constitution of the United States, you will grade how successfully the United States Government is meeting its constitutionally mandated goals today. For each of the 6 goals of government established in the Preamble, you will explain in a well-written paragraph what you think that goal means. You will identify three actions, programs, laws, or agencies that best exemplify the actions the government is currently taking to fulfill that goal. The item you select can be from history, but it must still be relevant and/or in use. You will write a brief explanation of the action, program, law, or agency, and you will then rate the government's performance as "0" (outstanding), "5" (satisfactory), or "U" (unsatisfactory) for that action. Next, you must decide on an overall grade for the goal-A, B, C, D, or F (+/- is allowed)-and write a two or three paragraph justification for the grade. Your justification must include specific facts to back ue your judgment. Make certain your writing is your very best, and that you spell-check and proofread all parts of your project.

1. Your report card will have eight major components:

  • A colorful and well-designed cover
  • Goal #1: To form a more perfect union
  • Goal #2: To establish justice
  • Goal #3: To ensure domestic tranquility
  • Goal #4: To provide for the common defense
  • Goal #5: To promote the general welfare
  • Goal #6: To secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity
  • A Justification of your grade and steps for further improvement for each goal

2. Each section of your report card must contain the following elements:

  • A subject heading (the goal)
  • At least one well-written paragraph explaining what you believe the goal means
  • Three actions, programs, laws, or agencies that best exemplify the government's current performance in this area (Each goal should have its own list of actions, programs, laws, or agencies. Do not use the same actions, programs, laws, or agencies more than one time.)
  • A well-written and clear description for each of the actions, programs, laws, or agencies you have selected
  • A grade for each action, program, law, or agency ("0", "5", or "U")
  • An overall grade for the goal (A-F, +/- are ok)
  • A well-written two or three paragraph justification for the overall grade (include specific facts!)
  • A remediation plan: please list and explain specific actions the United States Government should take to improve its performance on this goal. Even if you have given the government an "A", you must still give suggestions for improvement-our government is not yet perfect.

This assignment is based on the 6 goals of the government as established in the Preamble: to form a more perfect union, to establish justice, to ensure domestic tranquility, to provide for the common defense, to promote the general welfare, to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and posterity
