Question:

In this exercise you will use SPSS to analyze quantitative data, and you will prepare brief written and oral presentations of research results. Choose one of the datasets we have used for the course or locate an appropriate data source of your own (warning: this may entail more time and effort than you realistically have available) and a minimum of 3 variables to analyze-a dependent variable and 2 independent variables (again, this is a minimum).

1. Write (typed, double-spaced) a written research report with the following sections:

Data and Methods, Findings, Conclusion/Discussion

a. The Data and Methods section should explicitly identify your data source, the size of the sample, any issues with regard to response rates and/or missing data, the variables used (not by variable names, but descriptions of them-what they measure, how they are measured, etc.), and should outline the analytical methods you will use (see instructions on findings for guidance in terms of methods that you might need to include). Because you will not be including separate introductory and literature review sections, this section should also include statements of hypothesized relationships between the variables. The section should be 1-2 pages long.

b. The Findings section will present the results of your quantitative analyses. You should provide summary/descriptive statistical information about your dependent variable and at least one independent variable. In addition you should provide information about examinations of bivariate and multivariate analyses of relationships. You will need to determine the most appropriate way to present your findings in terms of text, tables, and/or graphical displays. At a minimum you will want to include at least one table and/or graph but you should likely not need more than three or four. The section should be 1-2 pages long (not including tables and graphs which should be embedded in the text but not counting toward length).

The Conclusion/Discussion section should very briefly reiterate what you found and if your findings were as you expected. You should then include a short discussion of how you might do additional or similar analyses. This portion is a bit open in terms of direction. You can discuss shortcomings in the data for questions you would like to answer, other variables that might be important, potential relationships in other times, other places, etc. The section should be 1-2 pages long
