Question: Assessment 1 - Assignment C

Student Name (Number):

Please ensure you rename your files (AEM201 SCI2SED Assignment A your name_your student number) before submitting and submit both your Excel spreadsheet and this Word doc with your answers (part of the marks assigned to some of these questions is for showing correct use of Microsoft Excel). There are five questions, worth a total of 20 marks.

Part A: Answer the following questions.

1. Researchers wish to examine the effect of a new pruning technique on Merlot grape yield. Write a suitable H1 and H0.

2. Having written suitable hypotheses, now calculate the number of vines that would be needed to perform the study, examining difference in yield with60% confidence and margin of error m<4 points. Standard deviation σ = 450 g/vine.

3. Researchers completed the study and found mean yield X ¯ = 6.3 kg/vine.

a. Use the z-procedure to estimate, with 95% confidence, the true mean weight μ(kg/vine) that could be obtained from all Merlot vines if the new pruning technique was undertaken across the entire vineyard.

b. Write a suitable statement to report your findings.

Part B:Using the following information and the spreadsheet Assignment C data.xlsx, answer the following questions.

4. Using the ‘ChickenData' worksheet. This study consisted of 6 hens in each of two groups (control and treatment) and examined weight gain (g/week) over a 14 week period. All hens were the same age (12 weeks) and breed at commencement of the study.

a. Perform a one sample hypothesis test the variable ‘ControlMeanWeightGain' to examine if the control group chickens weight gain was above an expected weight gain of 50 g/week (μ_0=50). Ensure you follow the ‘one population, hypothesis test mean, four steps in Excel'.

b. Once you have performed the hypothesis test for ‘ControlMeanWeightGain', write a suitable statement to report your findings.

c. Perform a one sample hypothesis test the variable ‘TreatmentMeanWeightGain' to examine if the treatment group chickens weight gain was above an expected weight gain of 50 g/week (μ_0=50). Ensure you follow the ‘one population hypothesis test mean four step process in Excel'.

d. Once you have performed the hypothesis test for ‘TreatmentMeanWeightGain', write a suitable statement to report your findings.

e. Perform a two sample hypothesis test to compare the mean weight gain between the control group and treatment group chickens. Ensure you follow the ‘two samples, comparing means, five step process in Excel'.

f. To perform the previous analysis you will need to have made a decision regarding if the data is matched or independent. Briefly explain your decision making process.

g. Once you have performed the hypothesis test to compare control and treatment groups, write a suitable statement to report your findings.

5. Using the ‘WheatData' worksheet. Data consists of Australian annual wheat production and export from 1960 to 2016.

a. Perform a simple linear regression to examine correlation between wheat production and wheat exports.

b. Once you have performed the simple linear regression, write a suitable statement to report your findings.
