3. The report should be 1500 (maximum 2,000) words in length.

Detailed context

Your firm is a small accounting practice that provides personal and business accounting services in the southern region of Adelaide. Currently it employs 21 people. 15 staff members, including the principal, are Certified Practicing Accountants. Of these there are 14 males and one female. All of these staff are over 35 years of age, with the majority being in their 50s. All have been with the company for between 5 and 25 years. The remaining six staff are in office and clerical support roles. They are all females under 30, with a variety of TAFE level qualifications. One of these has recently completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting at Flinders University.

The principal of the firm is conscious of the largely male profile of the firm, but has in the past expressed the opinion that there "just are not enough suitably qualified women in accounting" as an explanation for this gender profile. In the past, the firm has grown by recruiting accountants with at least 5-10 years work experience from major or second tier firms. While some members of the firm believe that this should continue to be the target for recruitment, others recognise that attracting staff with this profile is now difficult, particularly as the firm is already "top heavy" in terms of tenure, age, and experience. As such, they have decided to recruit 3 recent graduates into the firm.

In the past recruitment and selection has usually occurred through personal networks and relationships, rather than through a formal recruitment and selection process. However, the perceived need for "new blood", coupled with the competitive labour market, means that the firm has decided to broaden its recruitment activity.

You have been asked to recommend recruitment methods and selection methods, based on the position description provided, and justify the recruitment and selection recommendations using relevant theory to support their justification. You need to present a coherent well argued and clearly justified set of recommendations to enable the firm to proceed with the recruitment activity with confidence.

Structure of the Report

The report should be structured as a business report. However, you will need to consistently and comprehensively reference the sources of the information that you use throughout the document, using the Harvard referencing system.

Your report should include

- Introduction
- Body of the report
- Conclusions and recommendations
- References

Introduction
1. This states the purpose and structure of the report, and identifies the main theme or proposition(s) that you are trying to prove. It tells the reader what to expect.

Body
1. In the body of the report, you are trying to build a logical argument that supports the main theme or proposition. The body needs to be consistent with what you have said you are going to do in the introduction.
2. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence, and the points you are making should reflect that topic sentence.
3. You need to refer to theory to analyse the topic you are discussing.
4. Use theory and examples to explain your argument.
5. Remember that you are trying to present a logical, cohesive and clear analysis of the key issues that you have identified, and to use these to support your proposition or theme in a systematic way.
6. DO NOT TRY TO WRITE EVERYTHING THAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THE TOPIC IN THE HOPE THAT SOMETHING WILL BE GOOD.

Conclusion and recommendations
1. A conclusion is not just a list of the key points you have made. You need to draw together your key points to demonstrate that you have supported your theme or proven your proposition(s).
2. Your recommendations in this section need to be detailed.
3. The conclusion and recommendations need to be consistent with both the introduction and the body of the report.

Critical approach to the topic
1. The body of the report is consistent with the executive summary and introduction and critically analyses the topic.

2. Analysis shows knowledge of relevant theory and practice in recruitment and selection in Australia.

3. There is a balance between descriptive and analytical content, with a strong emphasis of critical analysis.

4. The topic is discussed using relevant and appropriate theoretical frames, and these are supported by the use of at least five primary sources (e.g. refereed journal articles)

Line of argument

1. The introduction outlines the main proposition of the report and body develops a clear line of argument. The argument is incisive and includes a concise, relevant treatment of the issues.

2. The conclusion and recommendations draws together the main points of the report and demonstrates a plausible, insightful, and rationally persuasive point at which to end the argument.

Use of academic literature/overall presentation

Judicious and appropriate use of at least five academic journal articles or research book chapters.

1. Makes limited use of textbook (or other text books), relying on primary sources to support their argument.

2. Sources are referenced consistently and comprehensively using the Harvard referencing system. #

3. Use of language appropriate to an academic report; Presentation is professional (e.g. spell and grammar checked, judicious use of headings, etc).
