Set up a contingency table, and analyze it for MAC.

Problem 2: As the newly appointed head of evaluation for the state agriculture experiment station, you are asked to evaluate the relative effectiveness of corn hybrids AX147 and AQ49. Of 32 test plots, AX147 had high yields on 21. AQ49 had high yields on 17 of 28 test plots. Construct a contingency table and make a recommendation.

Problem 3: A Ph. D. student in public administration has studied the relationship between the quality of municipal bureaucracy and the economic development of cities. She hypothesizes that the higher the quality of the city bureaucracy (as measured by such factors as innovativeness, efficiency, and responsiveness), the greater the economic development. By this hypothesis, she assumes that bureaucratic quality leads to economic development. To test this hypothesis, she sent out questionnaires to a random sample of 120 cities with a population between 50,000 and 100,000. Based on these data, she assembles the accompanying cross- tabulation.

Construct a contingency table and calculate the percentage difference. Also, conduct a chi-square test. Is there a relationship between bureaucratic quality and economic development?

Problem 4: Jeff Meier, Director of Research at the Wisconsin Council of Governments (WCG), is conducting a study on citizen perceptions of private sector and public sector service providers. Results from a survey commissioned by the WCG contain information on whether citizens have their trash collected by private refuse collection contractors or by traditional municipal trash collection crews: variable for "private collection" (coded 1), and for "municipal collection" (coded 2). The survey also asked citizens to state their service satisfaction level: variable for "satisfied with trash collection" (coded 1), for "dissatisfied" (coded 0). Calculate the percentage difference and conduct a chi-square test. Based on these data, can Dr. Meier conclude that public perceptions of private and municipal trash collectors are significantly different? Problem 5: A researcher is conducting an experiment to determine support for the feminist movement. The experimental procedure consists of playing a tape recording of a meeting of a feminist organization for a group of subjects and then comparing their attitudes with those of a matched control group of subjects who are not exposed to the tape. At the conclusion of the experiment, the researcher is amazed to find that the tape recording apparently made no difference in attitude toward the feminist movement. Check this result in the following table:

Problem 6: A consumer advocate is trying to get legislation passed that will protect the environment of a large city. To increase the probability of success, the advocate researches the history of all legislation introduced in the city council in the last 5 years. She records whether the bill was favorable or not favorable to industry, whether the bill was introduced by a member of the city council or by the mayor, and whether it passed or was defeated. These variables are cross-tabulated in the accompanying tables. From these cross-tabulations, whom should the advocate try to persuade to introduce her legislation in the city council? Explain your answer.

Problem 7: The MPA director at a large university is interested in the factors that lead to successful placement of MPA students in employment. She defines successful placement of an MPA student as being offered the position that was his or her first choice for employment after completing the program. From student transcripts, she has classified students' grade point averages in the MPA program into two categories: 3.0 or below, and above 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). From the transcripts, she also has determined whether the student took the courses in the quantitative concentration in the MPA program. These data appear in the accompanying tables. Based on the data, how should the MPA director advise students about how to receive successful placements?

Probme 8: The Department of Defense is concerned about the number of Harrier crashes. The Air Force argues that the crashes result because many of these planes are piloted by marines. The data for this claim are shown in the following table:
