Use the information in the Pennsylvania file. You are going to make comparisons between a group and an outcome variable of your choice. For all tables or graphs, make sure they look like a professional table that you might present to the Pennsylvania legislature. It should label the x and y variable. Include a title any relevant notes. It should also look aesthetically pleasing. Look at reports or academic articles to see how they present it and try to emulate the table or graph's strengths

a. First tell me what two variables you are looking at. Is there anything about their coding you should be mindful of?

b. Tell me a statistical hypothesis that involves the two variables you selected. Why do you expect this?

c. Create a summary table telling me the maximum, minimum, average and any missing values for both of the variables you selected

d. Create a contingency table comparing the two variables that you selected

e. Illustrate this information with a graph of your choice. Paste the graph below and explain why you think this is the best way of showing the data to strangers

Part 2 -

2. Browse articles from a major reputable newspaper source. Find an article about a research study that compared to groups, organizations, identities etc.

a. Paste the link here

b. In your own words, what was the purpose of the research study?

c. What was the explanatory variable(s)?

d. What was the response variable(s)?

e. Can you tell whether these to the school analysis used independent samples or dependent samples? Which was it?

f. What kind of comparisons were made? Was it a comparison of proportions or a comparison of means or is it unclear?

3. For 2016 NORC data, of those identifying as Democrats, 723 describe themselves as liberal and 172 as conservative. Of those identifying as Republicans, 94 called themselves liberal and 836 call themselves conservative.

a. Create a table in excel that compares the ideology of Democrats and Republicans. Treat partisanship as the response variable. Make sure this looks like a professional table. It should label the x and y variable. Include a title any relevant notes. It should also look aesthetically pleasing. Insert the table below

b. Using methods presented in this chapter, describe the strength of the association.

4. Discuss an example that would benefit from using the odds ratio to compare two groups. Be sure to discuss what the comparison groups are and why the odds ratio is helpful.

For binary response variable, we use success to denote the outcome of interest and failure to denote the other outcome. The odds of success are defined to be:

Odds = Probability of success/Probability of failure

The odds ratio is a measure of association for 2x2 contingency tables that equals the odds in row 1 divided by the odds in row 2. In other words, it is a relative measure of effect, which allows comparison of the intervention group of a study relative to the placebo/control group.
