In answering each question, please follow these steps:

1. Identify the variables to be used in the analysis.  According to their level of measurements what type of analysis should you be conducting/

2.  Identify the null and alternative hypotheses (may be more than 1 set).

3.  Present descriptive statistics (appropriate for the type of variable) in writing for each variable that you include in the test, by group if there is a grouping variable

4.  Conduct the appropriate test and identify and interpret results (report test statistic, df if given, and p-value

5. Summarize your findings in according to your null hypothesis

6. Present an appropriate graph depicting the relationship tested.

Answers must be written in complete sentences and have no direct SPSS output (except for figures).  Follow the examples of how to write hypothesis testing posted in the previous weeks. If you find a table to be necessary you may create one yourself and include only the relevant information in the table.

Datafile Name: alcoholism.sav.

Number of cases: 150

Variable Names:

1.      HIAA_5: 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (pmol/ml)

2.      TRYPT:CSF tyotophan (pmol/ml)

3.      Onset

4.      Gender

1.  Is time of onset (early or late) associated with gender?  (6 pts)

2. Is the mean CSF tyotophan (pmol/ml) equal for males and females? (8 pts)

3.  Is the mean CSF tyotophan (pmol/ml) equal for early versus late onset? (8 pts)

4. For males with late onset is the median of CSF tyotophan (pmol/ml) equal to 3,000 pmol/ml?  Do you get the same answer for females with late onset?  (Hint: you must use select cases to answer this question where variable 1 meets condition 1 and variable 2 meets condition 2.  Consider your sample size once you select the appropriate cases when determining the correct test.)  (8 pts)

5.  Correlation: Is there a correlation between CSF tyotophan (pmol/ml) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (pmol/ml)? (6 pts)

Datafile Name: Egyptian Skulls.sav

Story Names: Egyptian Skull Development

Description: Four measurements of male Egyptian skulls from 5 different time periods. Thirty skulls are measured from each time period.

Number of cases: 150

Variable Names:

  1. MB: Maximal Breadth of Skull
  2. BH: Basibregmatic Height of Skull
  3. BL: Basialveolar Length of Skull
  4. NH: Nasal Height of Skull
  5. Year: Time period skull is from
  6. MB_group
  7. NH_group

6. Does Maximal Breadth of Skull(MB) change over time (year)? Be sure to check the assumptions of the test and stated what the results and conclusions are.  Even if you violate the assumptions continue with the test.  Do any follow up tests if necessary and interpret the results.  (15 pts)

7.  Is Nasal Height correlated with Maximal Breadth of Skull?  How about Basibregmatic Height of Skull?

8. Does Basibregmatic Height of Skull (BH) differ for those with below average nasal height to those with above average nasal height (NH_Group)?

9. Use a non-parametric test to determine if For Skulls from 4000BC have a Maximal Breadth of Skull (MB) equal to 130cm?  What about the skulls from 150 AD? (Hint: use select cases).
