One way to think about the function of controlling is to think about keeping things "between the lines" as you would do when you drive a vehicle down the road. While there will be variation from time to time, managers need to limit that variation to the extent possible in order to ensure that strategic objectives are met and plans are executed. Sometimes this means limiting staffing and not opening acute care beds, even if there is demand for the ED. As you might imagine, this can create tremendous friction between departments. As a healthcare leader, how will you make sure that the controlling efforts made by managers complement one another rather than create friction and fighting over resources?
