Financial crises seem to hit the markets with surprising frequency; What is the explanation for these events, is it possible to construct early warning indicators?

Analysis of crises could attempt to see if certain economic indicators can be used to predict future crises. Perhaps following the approach of Kaminsky, Lizindo Reinhart 1997 or similar using more recent data or a subset of countries.
