MIS203 - Making Sense of Information Assignment

Assignment Case Study:

You are a newly incumbent project officer and media advisor for the Federal Government Department of Communication and the Arts. The new coalition government seeking to consolidate a mandate to govern from minor parties and independent representatives, is due to announce a rethink and new vision of the National Broadband Network (NBN). With the view of catering for greater growth potential and underpinning the emerging digital economy and to empower individual broadband users and demands of small business throughout Australia.

The vision emphasises Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP), which is a complete change from the previous policy of Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) plans and now seemingly reflects the former Labor Government's broadband policy of FTTP. The details, funding and time frame are still yet to be decided, but the government wants to share this vision now in an attempt to appease green voters, minor parties and independents in both the House of representative and the Senate especially considering the outcome of this years' election result.

Unfortunately the knowledgeable person tasked with the job of researching the benefits and challenges of the project has left the organisation expectantly and did not start any work on the project. Hence you have been asked to provide evidence for the government's new agenda and planned announcement within two days (48hrs) time.

Your manager has asked you to write up a brief interim report detailing the major benefits and challenges of this plan. She has provided you with Government (website) details and number of recent online news articles as a starting point.

One day after the announcement she will be giving a pre-lunch speech to the Press at the National Press Club of Australia as a prelude to the government Minister's main, after lunch address. There is sure to be a number of difficult questions about the policy change and the politics involved from the gathered press representatives regarding this radical change in policy

You have been asked to write a short speech to address the audience. It is expected the audience will ask some challenging questions, and you have been asked to write a few pre-emptive questions and sample answers.

In addition to the news articles mentioned in the case study, you have been provided with the following initial resources:
