Main stages of Statistical Inquiry

The following are the various stages of a statistical inquiry

(1)   Planning the Inquiry: First of all we have to assess the problem under investigation, a clear plan for investigation is made in the light of the object, scope, nature, sources, of information units and method of collection of data etc.

(2)   Collection of Data: The next step for investigation is the collection of raw data. Different methods for collection of data are used. For this purpose some qualified research assistants or surveyors are appointed. Different types of questionnaires and schedules be prepared and despatched to related respondents.

(3)   Editing of Collected Data: After collection of data, the next step is to edit the collected data in the light of the standard of accuracy to be maintained. Useless and unrelated data be sorted out and dropped a residual data be properly classified and presented for analysis and interpretation.

(4)   Classification and Tabulation of Data:    After the process of editing data, the next  step is to classify them in different classes and present the same in the form of tables so that analysis is convenient.

(5)   Presentation of Data: After classification and tabulation the data are present   in the form of averages, diagrams of graphs etc.

(6)   Analysis of Data: The presented data are to be analysed with the help of statistical methods by the senior members of the surveyors committee. The mathematical measures like   averages ,dispersion, correlation    etc. May be used for

(7)   Interpretation and writing off the Report: The last stage of investigation is the suitable and proper interpretation and preparation of a report of investigation by the investigator. The report is written in easy and clear language, as far possible .it should be concise and touch all the points regarding inquiry to make it a complete report.
