Grandparents

According to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), across the United States more than 5.8 million children are living in their grandparents' homes. When parents are not able to care for their children, the grandparents may take over parenting responsibilities. To begin this discussion, watch the video Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.

After watching the video, review the AARP fact sheet for your state (you will need to locate your state on the dropdown menu on the right side of the AARP website). Then, using the video, your state's fact sheet, and your course text, address the following:

• Summarize the information on your state's fact sheet.

• Explain the impact this type of situation may have on family relationships and the development of the child.

• Discuss your role in supporting families where the grandparents are raising their grandchildren. Use one additional scholary source to support your discussion.

Guided Response: Review several of your peers' responses. Respond to at least two of your peers who live in a different state than you. Share at least one similarity and one difference about the information shared in their summary about their state. In addition, provide one additional way in which they could support families where the grandparents are raising their grandchildren.

Though two replies is the basic expectation, for deeper engagement and learning you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have posted for you. Remember, continuing to engage with peers and the instructor will further the conversation and provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with this topic.
