Given the increasing concern by both the public and the financial community over the ongoing size of the annual budget deficit and the rising federal debt,Congress needs to take serious steps in reducing the deficit in the FY 18 budget process.

Your task in this assignment is to identify at least $15 billion in deficit reduction options that your MOC is likely to support in the upcoming budget process.

Your grade on this assignment will be based not only on meeting the target but also how well your proposal will (or won't) impact your district and is reflective of your representative's preferences.

In this assignment, you must choose from the "Reducing the Deficit: Spending and Revenue Options" developed by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

  • When developing your expenditure options, use the figure provided as the 2018 "Budget Authority" or "Budget Outlay".
  • For revenue options, use the 2018 figure under "Change in Revenues." Please note that a negative number related to an expenditure reduces the deficit (because you are cutting the budget) and a positive number related to a revenue also reduces the deficit (because you are increasing a source of revenue).
  • Also, be aware that expenditure figures are in millions while the revenue figures are in billions.

In your assignment, you will need to identify at a minimum 4 unrelated spending options that total at least $5 billion in savings and at a minimum 2 unrelated revenue options that generate at least $10 billion in revenue that are likely to be supported by your member of Congress.

You will then to write a paragraph or two summarizing each of the chosen options and justifying why your representative would be likely to support such an option. You will find the spending and revenue options developed by CBO located in our "Content" area in Blackboard ("CBO Report").
