Childhood participation in sports, cultural groups, and youth groups seems to be associated to improved self-esteem for adolescents (McGee, Williams, Howden-Chapman, Martin, & Kawachi, 2006). In the representative study, sample of n = 100 adolescents with history of group participation is given standardized self-esteem questionnaire. For general population of adolescents, scores on this questionnaire form normal distribution with mean of µ = 40 and standard deviation of σ = 12. Sample of group-participation adolescents had average of M = 43.84. Does this sample give sufficient evidence to conclude that self-esteem scores for group-participation adolescents are significantly different from those of general population? Use two-tailed test with α = .01.
