Data Analysis Assignment -

In this assignment, you will be with provided data in SPSS format.

Conduct specific statistical analysis procedures.

Prepare a report describing:

  • Your data analysis procedures and the specific variables use in the analysis
  • The results of your analysis

Present your results in appropriate tables and/or graphs.

Use the NHIS subset provided to you for 2000 to conduct the following procedures:

1. Provide a summary table for the study variables with some descriptive data about the study sample including the means & standard deviations for continuous variables (scale) and frequencies/proportions for categorical variables (nominal and ordinal). Write a paragraph or two describing the characteristics of the study participants.

2. Use the "Transform-Recode into Different Variable" function to recode DESIREWT into a new variable as follows (call the new variable BODYWEIGHT):

Underweight: 5% or more below desirable body weight (combining 1 & 2)

- Normal body weight: Within 4.9% of desirable body weight (using 3)

- Overweight: 5-19.9% or more above desirable body weight (combining 4 & 5)

- Obese: 20% or more above desirable body weight (combining 6 & 7)

- Missing: an answer of 9 (make sure on the variable view you set the "missing" at 9) Provide descriptive information for Body weight based on these transformed answers.

3. Use the "Transform-Compute Variable" function to create a new variable as follows to calculate the average exercise frequency (call the new variable AVRGEXER):

AVRGEXER= (VIGFREQW + MODFREQW + STRFREQW) / 3

Provide descriptive information for this variable in your text.

4. Examine if there's a correlation between age and exercise frequency (VIGFREQW, MODFREQW, STRFREQW, or AVRGEXER, whichever you like best). Show the two variables on a scatter plot, conduct the appropriate statistical test, and describe in your text.

5. Examine if there's statistically significant difference for males compared to females on the mean exercise frequency (VIGFREQW, MODFREQW, STRFREQW, and AVRGEXER, whichever you like best). Show a comparative box plot for exercise frequency among males versus females, conduct the appropriate statistical test, and describe in your text.

6. Examine if there's statistically significant difference in Smoking for males compared to females (Hint: cross-tabulate smoking and gender and request a Chi-square test), and present in a comparative bar chart. Present and describe the results in your text.
