Comparing Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches

In RSCH 8100, you had some exposure to both qualitative and quantitative methods of research. As you begin your more in-depth study of qualitative research methods, it is important to recall the characteristics of qualitative research that differentiate it from quantitative research. In this Discussion activity, you will compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative approaches, and think about situations where each type of research could be used most effectively.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the required course text readings in Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches; Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods; and Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches.

Consider some similarities and differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches to research design and methodology.

Think about situations when qualitative research might be a more appropriate approach than quantitative and vice versa.
With these thoughts in mind:

Post a 3-paragraph comparison of qualitative and quantitative research approaches.

When appropriate, be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the reading(s) and/or video program(s) and use APA format.
