Given this data and assuming that absenteeism rates are normally distributed, use SPSS to construct a 90% confidence interval for the average absenteeism rate.

2. There are 181 subjects under various experimental conditions. The variable "ph" is a dichotomous variable that indicates whether the parents of a subject have hypertension, (0 = No, 1 = Yes). Use SPSS to test whether 60% of the parents have hypertension.

State the statistical null and research hypotheses.

Use SPSS to test the null hypothesis at a significance level of 5% using a one sample t-test. Show the variable view, data view, and output screens. (Note: since there are 181 individuals in the data set, it may not be possible to show the entire data set (i.e., all cases) on one screen. For this problem, only show as many individuals as can be displayed on one page.)

3. For each subject, the binary variable "ph" indicates whether there is a parental history of hypertension: ph =0, no history; ph=1, parental history. Use this file to determine whether subjects with no parental history of hypertension have lower resting diastolic blood pressure than subjects with a parental history of hypertension.

a. State the statistical null and alternative hypotheses.

b. Using SPSS, run an independent samples t-test to determine whether the null hypothesis should be retained or rejected at the 5% significance level. Assume the variances for the two groups are not equal. Justify your answer based on the SPSS output by indicating the probability associated with the t-statistic.

4. A Ph.D. student in public administration has studied the relationship between the quality of municipal bureaucracy and the economic development of cities. She hypothesizes that the higher the quality of the city bureaucracy (as measured by such factors as innovativeness, efficiency, and responsiveness), the greater the economic development; that is, bureaucratic quality leads to economic development. To test this hypothesis, she obtains survey results from a random sample of 120 cities with populations between 50,000 and 100,000. Based on the survey results, she assembles the bivariate table shown below. Use SPSS to calculate the gamma statistic and assess whether there is a relationship between bureaucratic quality and economic development. Note: show the Variable View, Data View, and output screens.
