Conduct a shift-share analysis of an Australian non-metropolitan Local Government Area (LGA) or Statistical Local Area (SLA) of your choice and discuss your findings.

Following the reading, instructions and example provided in Module 4, go to the Australian Bureau of Statistics website and download a Time Series Profile (TSP) for one Local Government Area (LGA) or Statistical Local Area (SLA) of your choice (perhaps the one you live in), and for the 2001, 2006 and 2011 Censuses, and conduct a shift-share analysis of it. You could conduct your shift-share analysis on the 2001-2006, 2006-2011 or 2001-2011 periods - it's up to you! Remember - you will also need the TSP for the State in which your SLA/LGA is located.

Once you have completed collecting your data, conduct your shift-share analysis and analyse your results. In approximately 1800 words (GeoPlan 345 students; 2000 words for GeoPlan 445 students; 2500 words for GeoPlan 545 students) or less, comment on:

• What the national (or state), structural and differential components tell you about the economic structure of your chosen region;

• The reasons for these results. In doing so, try and situate your SLA/LGA's result within a broader context. For example, if you are analysing an SLA/LGA from a highly remote, broadacre farming region you should discuss the extent to which your SLA/LGA's performance is driven by forces within the broader region and is typical of other similarly-positioned SLA/LGAs.

• What strategies your SLA/LGA could or should employ in the light of these results to enhance local economic development.
