Networking is the skill of knowing and building rapport along with people who can assist you in the management of your project not who is not part of the project team. But traditional management hierarchies are slowly disappearing and into flatter, decentralised organisations this assists to know various people in various departments who can provides you alternative views and information, and bring affect to bear on your behalf. You’d positively want to ensure that you had connections in all of the stakeholder groups and in Finance and HR when they were not known as stakeholders.
