In 1959, the national debate question was: Should we give Federal Aid to public schools? Federal aid to public education was controversial because of the country's long tradition of "local control," i.e., education being a state responsibility. Opponents were fearful that federal money would be followed by federal control. Fifty years later, the federal resources for public education shows approximately 10% of the public education budget. Should the national debate question for 2009 revisit the 1959 question of whether we should give Federal Aid to public schools? Why or why not?
