LMS (Learning Management System) is an application that is the backbone of online learning. It helps schools develop, manage, assign and track online classes. LMS helps schools deliver courses to student providing a single source for instruction including content and material. Professors and students can track progress throughout the course.

LMS allows professors to engage students with video learning, discussion boards and group projets which would be very difficult for the nontraditional students without the application. Some other benefits of an LMS are that professors can easily keep their courses up to date by making necessary changes as needed, it can be more cost effective for the school. For students, LMS allows students that do not have the time for traditional education the ability to work towards their degrees at times that work best for them via online.

The components of an LMS depends on the need of the school, but some of the most important components would be:

  • student data/roster
  • course creation and management
  • self-marking quizzes and tests
  • the ability to mark work
  • Grade book
  • work setting and submission
  • Discussion boards
  • Group study
  • Media
  • An internal messaging system and email
