Assessment Task: Financial Statement Analysis

Task description - This assessment requires you to examine, analyse, discuss and draw conclusions regarding the financial performance and financial position of an organisation.

Organisation - Kmart or Virgin airlines.

Obtain the most recent financial reports of a listed organisation, or other organisation for which you are able to access sufficient information. Examine and analyse the financial reports of the organisation, together with additional background and contextual information that will enable you to provide an informed financial analysis.

Draft a report in which you describe, discuss and comment upon the financial performance and financial position of the organisation.

In order to inform your analysis, ensure that you include a discussion of relevant background to the organisation and its industry, and the scope of your analysis. In your discussion identify key financial issues that are of particular importance to the organisation. This could include factors such as key market conditions or external factors affecting the organisation, the demand for its products / services, and its costs, explaining their relevance to the financial situation.

In the analysis, identify and discuss factors that are critical to the financial viability of the selected organisation. You may also cover major initiatives or events that have had a major financial impact. AS examples, this could include a comment on branding and products, market positioning, financial or organisational structure, impacts of GFC, supply chain management activities, or other strategic responses and activities that are relevant to understanding the financial performance and position of the organisation.

Ensure that your assessment clearly identifies the financial impacts of these activities / responses. Provide financial ratio analysis to support your discussion. If relevant, you may integrate non-financial performance and reporting into your analysis and discussion.

Assessment Format: This assessment should be submitted in report format with an assessment cover sheet, title page, executive summary, table of contents, introduction, discussion, conclusion, list of references and appendices (if required).
